Crystals 101: A Guide to Crystal Shapes & Their Meanings

An assortment of crystal shapes including raw chunks, tumble stones, points, a pyramid, and a cluster on a light stone surface

Crystal shapes matter more than many people realise. The same stone — say, rose quartz or black tourmaline — will feel and work differently depending on its form. Shape influences how energy moves, where it's directed, and how it interacts with your space and body. If you're new to crystals, our What Are Crystals, Anyway? guide is a great place to start.

Here's a guide to the most common crystal shapes and what makes each one special.

Rough (or Raw) Crystals 🪨

Rough raw crystals in their natural unpolished form

Rough crystals are exactly as nature intended — uncut, unpolished, and deeply connected to the earth's energy. Many believe raw stones carry a more potent, unfiltered energy than their polished counterparts, making them ideal for grounding, protection, and strength. Our Rough Black Tourmaline Chunk is a powerful example — read more in our Black Tourmaline guide.

Tumble Stones 🔀

Smooth polished tumble stones in various colours

Smooth, rounded, and wonderfully tactile, tumble stones are one of the most versatile forms you'll find. Their gentle, balanced energy makes them perfect for carrying in a pocket, placing around the home, or holding during meditation. They're also a beautiful starting point for anyone new to crystals. Browse our Lemon Calcite Tumblestones as a sunny, uplifting example.

Palm Stones 🤲

Also known as worry stones, palm stones are flat and polished to fit comfortably in the hand. Their calming, grounding energy makes them ideal companions for stress relief, anxiety, and moments when you simply need to feel more centred. Our Moss Agate Palmstone is a customer favourite for exactly this.

Twin Crystals 👫

Twin crystals grown together sharing a common base

Twin crystals are two points that have grown together from a shared base. They are said to symbolise harmony, unity, and connection — making them a meaningful choice for supporting relationships, attracting kindred spirits, and cultivating self-love.

Clusters ✨

Clusters are groups of smaller crystals growing together in a single formation. They radiate energy outward in all directions, making them wonderful for filling a room with positive, calming energy. They're also excellent for clearing negativity and recharging other crystals. Our Grape Agate Cluster is a stunning example.

Geodes 🔮

Two geode halves cracked open revealing sparkling crystals inside

Geodes are hollow rock formations lined with crystal points on the inside. Their enclosed shape allows them to hold and amplify energy beautifully — they're often used in meditation, for cleansing other crystals, and as a stunning focal point in any space. Take a look at our White Quartz Geode for a beautiful example.

Pyramids 🔺

The pyramid shape focuses and directs energy upward through its apex, making it a powerful tool for manifestation and intention-setting. Pyramids are also known for their energy-amplifying properties and their connection to spiritual growth. Explore our Labradorite Pyramid for a beautiful example.

Spheres 🌕

Polished crystal spheres in rose quartz, amethyst, labradorite, and clear quartz on a light stone surface

Crystal spheres emit energy equally in all directions, making them one of the most harmonising shapes you can work with. They are said to promote unity, wholeness, and a sense of calm — perfect for meditation, scrying, or simply as a centrepiece in your space. Their smooth, continuous surface also makes them deeply soothing to hold. Browse our Crystal Spheres for a beautiful collection.

Points & Towers 🗂

Polished crystal towers and points in various stones on a light stone surface

Points and towers both direct energy upward through a single termination, making them excellent for intention-setting, focus, and amplifying the energy of other crystals. Single-terminated points taper naturally to a tip, while towers have a flat cut base for stability — making them ideal for placing in a room to anchor and uplift the energy of a space. Both are wonderfully versatile and among the most popular crystal forms. Our Clear Quartz Polished Point and Zebra Agate Druzy Obelisk are beautiful examples of each.

Double-Terminated Points ↔️

With a point at both ends, double-terminated crystals absorb and emit energy simultaneously. They're ideal for energy healing, balancing chakras, and creating a flow of energy between two points — whether in a grid, a healing layout, or simply held in both hands. Our Amber Aragonite Double Terminated Point is a beautiful example.

Generator Points ⚡

A generator crystal point with six symmetrical facets converging to a single termination

Generator points have six symmetrical facets that converge to a single termination, creating a powerful, focused stream of energy. They amplify the energy of surrounding crystals and are particularly effective for meditation, manifestation, and charging your intentions. Our Hematite Cut Base Generator Point is a striking choice.

Fun fact: depending on their type and shape, points can be considered masculine, feminine, or androgynous in their energetic quality.

Trust your intuition when choosing a shape — your instincts will often lead you to exactly what you need. And if you're still finding your feet, our How to Choose the Right Crystal for You guide is a great place to start.
